Nupes Night Out All Star Weekend

On February 25, 2012 the Brothers of Queens Alumni hosted their monthly Nupes Night Out Reclamation event at Magnet Lounge in Elmont, NY. This particular Nupes Night Out was entitled All-Star Weekend Edition as we watched the NBA All-Star Skills Competition, 3-Point contest, and Slam Dunk contest. There were approximately 50 to 75 people in attendance, a mixture of Brothers- 4 of which were Brothers who are not financial and in search of a chapter- and other guests. Thank you to Brother Caron Washington for securing Magnet Lounge for Nupes Night Out All-Star Weekend Edition.

Voter Registration

On Monday February 20 2012, the Brothers of Queens Alumni joined the Queens Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta for their Voter Registration Drive. Brothers walked up and down Jamaica avenue and registered people to vote and also gave individuals the opportunity to indicate an address change if needed. In light of the fact that people of color had to fight for that right to vote which was made possible by the 15th amendment the Brothers of Queens Alumni will be having a series of Voter Registration Drives as well as partnering with other organizations. There were 7 members of Delta Sigma Theta, one member of Omega Psi Phi and family & friends of the aforementioned people, there to help with the registration. In total about 30 people were registered. Brothers present were: Brothers Leon Heyliger and Jackson Georges.

Women Self Defense Workshop

On Saturday, February 11, 2012, the Queens Alumni Chapter as part of Kappas Against Sexual Domestic Violence (KASDV) was one of two Lead Sponsors for a series of Women Self Defense & Empowerment Seminars hosted by Martin Luther School.

Kappas Against Sexual Domestic Violence has four principle objectives:

1) Create and enhance Community Consciousness towards the issue of Sexual and Domestic Violence overall and locally, specifically how it relates to Women.

2) Show Male Support in speaking out and in taking action against Sexual and Domestic Violence in the local community.

3) Provide Information for local survivors of Sexual and Domestic Violence.

4) Offer Sexual and Domestic violence Awareness and Sensitivity training to the local community including college campuses.

The seminars were facilitated by Ms. Evon Reyes, founder of Fearless Fighting Females. She is  a certified women's self defense instructor of the Fight Like a Girl and Girls on Guard programs, certified by Steve Kardian of Defend University.  Steve Kardian is one of the nations go to experts on issues of women's safety and a national media consultant for CNN, Fox News, CBS & NBC.  Ms. Reyes is also a black belt under Guro Sonny Mayo of the Doce Pares Filipino Martial Arts system. She began martial arts training over 7 years ago where her goal was to get in shape, but she has gotten much more out of the experience.

As a sponsor, Queens Alumni received 15 guest passes, which were given to women in the Queens community, female students at Martin Luther High School, sorority women in neighboring Queens chapters, and female family members of the Queens Alumni Brothers.
