Message From Our Polemarch

Welcome to the Queens Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. website!

The Queens Alumni Chapter was founded March 10, 1990, at the Roy Wilkins Center in Jamaica, NY. Inspired by the visionary leadership of Brothers Paul Carey and Geoff Gross, the 15 charter members, most of whom were recent college graduates, sought to inspire and provide a new, different and diverse perspective and voice of Kappa principles and objectives to the City of New York, with a special focus on the borough of Queens.
Over the past twenty-seven years, the Queens Alumni Chapter has provided service to the Queens community and has implemented programs consistent with the Fraternity's objectives such as:

• Annual “Salute to Achiever’s” Celebration – an award ceremony where we recognized Kappa Men in the metropolitan area for their Leadership, Dedication, and Vision
• Annual Health Fair
• Feed the Needy

• Adopt-a-Family
• Toy Drive programs
• Financial Aid programs for college bound students
• Sunday of Hope - is a program benefiting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. where each chapter partners with a church to raise money.
• Kappas against Sexual & Domestic Violence
• Adopt-a-Highway Beautification Project
• NY Cares Community Service programs
• Voter Registration and Awareness programs

The Queens Alumni Chapter has also received tremendous accolades from the Fraternity as well as the community:

• Northeastern Province Reclamation Chapter of the Year from 2002-04 and 2006
• National Reclamation Chapter of the year in 2009
•Northeastern Province Chapter of the Year in 2005, 2006, and 2007
• Declaration of Honor: Proclamation from the Borough President of Queens Helen M. Marshall in 2006
•Declaration of Honor: Proclamation from the Borough President of Queens Helen M. Marshall in 2010

One of the chapter's main focuses has been the guidance of young, predominantly urban males in an effort to assist them in their journey to becoming responsible and productive MEN. Through nurturing relationships and involvement with four undergraduate chapters, a broad base Guide Right program featuring the “Kappa Development League” located at the Queens Eagle Academy for Young Men and individually committed efforts of its membership, the Queens Alumni Chapter seeks to instill in young urban males a sense of pride, determination, respect, responsibility, knowledge of self, academic excellence, maturity and moral integrity.

January 2012 Chapter News

Red Tails Movie Premiere

On Friday, January 20th, 2012 the Brothers of the Queens Alumni (QA) and New York Alumni (NYA) Chapters of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and the Association of Black Women Attorneys (ABWA), hosted a screening of the film Red Tails in cooperation with the Magic Johnson Theater in Harlem. Red Tails is an action adventure film inspired by true events and based on the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American combat pilots who took to the skies during World War II to combat the enemy abroad and discrimination at home. The film is one of the first of its kind to feature an all African American male cast, and stars Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr.

A sold out theater of approximately 300 guests filled the 8pm show in support of this historic film. Guests included Kappa men, family, friends, community members, and local officials. The Queens Alumni Chapter also attended the film with 11 students from our Young Achievers Mentoring Program. We hope that in exposing more young people of color to these heroic endeavors, and such an important moment in history, it will encourage them to remain diligent in their efforts to reach their potential and be successful in their own right.

We were also honored to have several Tuskegee Airmen, and their families, join us for the evening including Wilfred Defour (366th Air Service Squadron, 96th Air Service Group) and Dabney Montgomery (1051st Quartermaster Company of the 96th Air Service Group, 332nd Air Fighter Group). After the screening, the Airmen stayed to meet the moviegoers and sign autographs.

The evening also included a pre-film reception at 67 Orange in Harlem, and a post-film celebration at the Harlem Tavern.

We recognize QA Polemarch Jermaine Wright, and Brothers Thierry Cazeau (QA), Edward Smith (QA) and Marcus Jones (NYA) for their work in planning this event and to all Brothers who assisted in ensuring that this was another successful Kappa event. Special acknowledgement goes to Brother Caleb Terry (QA) for coordinating the transport of the Young Achievers from Queens to Harlem.

As an organization whose membership is made up primarily of African American men, the Brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. believe that it was our obligation to assist in the promotion and awareness of a film that depicts African American men in a positive light, as well as recognizes the courage and sacrifices of the Tuskegee Airmen, and the important role that they played in the history of this country.
