Afrikan Poetry Theater Feed the Needy

On Thursday November 24, 2011, Thanksgiving Day, the Queens Alumni Chapter (QA) along with Epsilon Pi Omega Queens Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha answered the call for service and gave of their time selflessly at the Afrikan Poetry Theatre in Queens, NY where Brother Gerald Deas, QA Charter member, serves as a board member. The Brothers of Queens Alumni served food and distributed clothing to the elderly, homeless, and needy. Our efforts began early Thursday morning which entailed dividing Brothers into two groups, one group for serving food and other for distributing clothing. The Brothers that served the food spent their time preparing, serving, and packaging hot meals for the needy and elderly in the area resulting in more than 500 hot meals being prepared and served. While the Brothers distributing the clothing collected, sorted, and arranged gently used clothing, shoes and outerwear. We are dedicated to building relationships in the Queens community in keeping with our Polemarch's vision of Queens Alumni for Queens.

Thank you to following Brothers that gave a helping hand: Gerald Deas, Jermaine Wright, Leon Heyliger, Jude Casimir, Walter Marable, Marcus Poon, Derrick Isaac, Edwidge Turenne, Will Ramirez, Jack Georges, Pierre Jean Baptiste, Rondell King, Ricky Grant, Daniel Dodard, Justin Persaud, Taj Moore, and Leron Haywood.

Electric Company Outreach Event at the Queens Central Library

On Saturday, November 12, 2011, Brothers of the Queens Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and friends, volunteered over 6 hours of their time to assist in The Electric Company Community Outreach Event held at the Jamaica Branch of the Queens Central Library.

The purpose of event is for participating PBS stations to mobilize their communities around literacy enhancement, engage children and their families in literacy development, and generate excitement about The Electric Company (TEC) in their neighborhoods

The November 12th event was held in coordination with WNET. Volunteers assisted in monitoring over 200 children ages 6-9 yrs old as they colored a TEC monster mural, ushered children and families to activities and the auditorium, helped with registration, served as runners for talent, and escorted surprise guests. They also helped with the stage/game show, distributed goodie bags and coordinated a safe exit for all participants.

According to Randell Bynum, Senior Director of TEC Outreach and Partnerships, “The event was a tremendous success and we attribute some of that success to your support.”
